The winning numbers for the Powerball drawing on Monday, October 12, 2026 were 22, 28, 38, 51 and 69, with a red Powerball of 9. The Power Play multiplier was 3x. According to Powerball, nobody matched all six numbers, so the estimated $541 million jackpot rolled over, and one ticket sold in the United Kingdom matched all five white balls for the $1 million prize.

We'll be upfront: this recap is going up four days after the drawing, on Friday, October 16. Two things have happened since Monday night. There was another drawing on Wednesday, October 14, and the jackpot has kept growing. So in addition to the full breakdown of Monday's result, you'll find a short update on Wednesday's drawing and the current estimate for Saturday, October 17.

Double Play, Mon., Oct. 12, 202623 - 25 - 51 - 53 - 5416—

These numbers come from the official New York State open-data Powerball results feed, and they match the result posted on powerball.com. Double Play is a separate drawing held right after the main one, and it's only offered in participating jurisdictions. If you didn't add Double Play to your ticket, only the first row applies to you.

Jackpot and winners on October 12

Here's what Powerball reported for Monday's drawing:

  • Advertised jackpot: an estimated $541 million (annuity), with a cash value of about $221.7 million.
  • Jackpot winners: none.
  • Match 5 ($1 million): one winner, and Powerball lists the location as the United Kingdom.
  • Match 5 with Power Play ($2 million): no winners.
  • Match 4 + Powerball: 11 tickets won $50,000, and six more had Power Play, which tripled the prize to $150,000.

The UK detail is worth a moment. Powerball tickets have been sold in the United Kingdom through Allwyn since July 21, 2026, and those sales feed the same prize pools as U.S. sales. So a Match 5 winner overseas is now part of the normal picture.

Winners by prize tier

Here's the full winners table Powerball posted for October 12. The "Power Play winners" columns count tickets that won a tier with Power Play added. Because the multiplier was 3x, those players collected three times the base prize, except at Match 5, where the Power Play prize is always a flat $2 million.

Powerball only299,833$486,737$12

Adding both columns, according to Powerball, 587,674 tickets won a prize in this drawing: 455,906 without Power Play and 131,768 with it. At the standard amounts in the table, those prizes add up to roughly $6.2 million. (California pays non-jackpot tiers on a pari-mutuel basis, so its actual amounts can be different.)

What the table tells you

A few things stand out once you look at the numbers instead of just the top line:

  • Most winners won $4 to $12. The two lowest tiers, "1 + Powerball" and "Powerball only," account for 544,396 winning tickets. That's about 93% of all winners. Matching the red ball is by far the most common way to win anything.
  • Power Play showed up in about 22% of winning tickets. Of the 587,674 winners, 131,768 had the add-on. At 3x, those players collected $12 instead of $4, or $21 instead of $7, for the same match.

Why the 3x multiplier mattered

A 3x Power Play isn't rare, but it isn't the most common outcome either. Over the drawings in the official data since October 2015, about 56% produced 2x and about 32% produced 3x. The 4x, 5x and 10x values make up the rest, and 10x is only in play when the advertised jackpot is $150 million or less. With Monday's jackpot at $541 million, 10x couldn't be drawn.

Here's what 3x did to each non-jackpot prize for someone who paid the extra $1:

Base prizeWith Power Play 3xExtra won
$50,000$150,000$100,000
$100$300$200
$7$21$14
$4$12$8

The jackpot itself is never multiplied, and Match 5 is fixed at $2 million with Power Play no matter which multiplier is drawn. Power Play also doesn't change your odds of matching any numbers. It only changes how much a non-jackpot match pays. Whether the extra $1 is worth it for you is a question of budget and preference, and our guide to Power Play explained walks through the math.

A quick look at the numbers (trivia only)

Everything in this section is description, not prediction. Powerball drawings are random and independent. Any five white balls and any Powerball have exactly the same chance in the next drawing, and no number is ever "due" or "hot" in a way that matters.

  • Odd and even: two odd numbers (51, 69) and three even numbers (22, 28, 38).
  • Low and high: using 1–34 as "low" and 35–69 as "high," two were low (22, 28) and three were high (38, 51, 69).
  • Sum: the five white balls add up to 208, above the long-run average of 175.
  • Spread: the gap from the lowest ball (22) to the highest (69) was 47.
  • Repeats: 51 also came up two drawings earlier, on Saturday, October 10, and it appeared in Monday's Double Play drawing as well. The red ball 9 was also the Powerball on Monday, October 5.
  • Double Play: 23, 25, 51, 53 and 54 include one consecutive pair (53 and 54), four odd numbers and one even number, and they add up to 206.

In our recap of the October 7 drawing, 51 had the longest gap of any white ball, 57 drawings. Then it came up on October 10 and again on October 12. Neither the long gap nor the quick repeat says anything about the next drawing. The balls don't track their own history.

Odd and even: how common is a 2-3 split?

Monday's draw had two odd and three even white balls. Because the range 1–69 contains 35 odd and 34 even numbers, splits near the middle are the most likely by simple counting. The chart below compares how often each number of odd balls has appeared since October 2015 with what probability theory predicts.

A draw with exactly two odd balls, like Monday's, has happened in about 31% of drawings, right where theory puts it (about 31.7%). Two odd and three odd together cover nearly two-thirds of all drawings. Monday's Double Play result, with four odd balls, falls in a less common group at about 16%.

What the chart does not mean: picking a "balanced" mix of odd and even numbers doesn't raise your chance of winning. There are simply more combinations with two or three odd numbers than with zero or five. Any one specific combination, balanced or not, has the same 1 in 292,201,338 chance of hitting the jackpot. For more on where that figure comes from, see Powerball odds explained.

Sums: Monday ran high, but the average holds

The five white balls on Monday added up to 208. That's well above 175, the long-run average sum when five balls are drawn from 1 to 69. Over a single drawing, sums wander a lot. Over a year, they settle down, as this chart of the average sum by calendar year shows.

Apart from 2015, which only covers the last few months of that year, every full year's average has stayed within about six points of 175, ranging from about 170 in 2019 to about 181 in 2022. So far in 2026 the average is about 178. Single drawings swing widely; averages over many drawings settle near the theoretical value.

Monday's 208 came right after two low sums (124 on October 7 and 108 on October 10), and Wednesday's 162 fell back below the line. Across these 20 drawings, sums ranged from 93 to 224. A run of low sums doesn't make a high sum more likely, and picking numbers that "add up to about 175" doesn't improve your odds.

How Monday compares with recent drawings

For context, here are the most recent drawings through October 14, from the official New York State open-data results feed.

DrawingWhite ballsPowerballPower PlaySum
Wed., Oct. 143 - 34 - 37 - 42 - 46203x162

Mon., Oct. 516 - 23 - 32 - 36 - 5492x161
Sat., Oct. 34 - 42 - 44 - 55 - 59142x204

Monday's 3x ended a run of four straight 2x multipliers, and Wednesday's drawing produced 3x again. Like everything else in the table, that's coincidence. Each multiplier is drawn fresh, with the same chances every time under the rules in effect.

What happened next: October 14 and Saturday's jackpot

Since this recap is late, here's the short version of what followed.

Wednesday, October 14. The winning numbers were 3, 34, 37, 42 and 46, with Powerball 20, and the Power Play was again 3x. According to Powerball, the estimated $566 million jackpot (cash value about $231.9 million) was not won. One ticket in Minnesota matched five white balls with Power Play for the $2 million prize. Wednesday's Double Play numbers were 11, 17, 37, 58 and 69, with Powerball 9.

Saturday, October 17. As of Friday morning, Powerball lists the next drawing as Saturday, October 17, 2026, at 10:59 p.m. ET, with an estimated jackpot of $600 million and a cash value of about $246.0 million. Estimates can change before the drawing as sales come in, and ticket cutoff times vary by state.

How the jackpot grew over three drawings

DrawingEstimated jackpot (annuity)Cash valueCash as % of annuity
Mon., Oct. 12$541 million$221.7 millionabout 41%
Wed., Oct. 14$566 million$231.9 millionabout 41%
Sat., Oct. 17 (est.)$600 million$246.0 millionabout 41%

From Monday to Saturday, the advertised jackpot grew by an estimated $59 million, but the cash value grew by about $24.3 million. That gap is normal. The headline number is the total of 30 annuity payments over 29 years, while the cash value is what's actually in the prize pool today. A bigger jackpot is bigger news, but your chance of winning it stays exactly 1 in 292,201,338 per play.

What a Monday prize is worth after tax

Prize amounts in the winners table are before taxes. Here's how federal withholding works on the larger prizes actually won on October 12. These are illustrations for U.S. tickets, not tax advice, and your real tax bill depends on your total income for the year.

  1. Match 4 + Powerball, $50,000. For U.S. citizens, lotteries withhold 24% federal tax on prizes over $5,000. That's $12,000 withheld, leaving about $38,000 before any state tax.
  2. Match 4 + Powerball with Power Play 3x, $150,000. Withholding of 24% is $36,000, leaving about $114,000 before state tax. Because the top federal bracket is 37%, a prize this size can mean you owe more than what was withheld when you file.
  3. Prizes of $5,000 or less. The $4, $7, $12, $21, $100 and $300 prizes are paid without federal withholding, but all lottery winnings count as taxable income and belong on your return.

State rules vary widely. Some states don't tax lottery winnings, while others withhold state income tax on larger prizes, so check your state's rules. The Match 5 winner on Monday bought a UK ticket, and UK prizes are handled under UK rules, so the U.S. examples above don't apply to that ticket.

How to check a ticket from October 12

  1. Check the date. Make sure your ticket is for Monday, October 12, 2026. If it's a multi-draw ticket, see which drawings it covers; it may also include October 14 and later.
  2. Match the white balls in any order. Compare your five white numbers with 22, 28, 38, 51 and 69.
  3. Match the Powerball separately. Only your red Powerball counts against the red ball, which was 9. A 9 among your white numbers is not a Powerball match.
  4. Apply the add-ons. With Power Play, multiply any non-jackpot prize by 3 (Match 5 is $2 million). With Double Play, check the same numbers against 23, 25, 51, 53, 54 and Powerball 16, using the Double Play prize table.
  5. Confirm officially. Scan the ticket in your state lottery's app or at a retailer terminal. Sign the back of any winning ticket, since a paper ticket is generally treated as belonging to whoever holds it.

Every state sets its own claim deadline, counted from the drawing date, and larger prizes usually have to be claimed at a lottery office. For what each match pays and the odds of each tier, see our Powerball prize chart.
